Japan's emperor has upset Shinzo Abe's election victory plans

When former US Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke arrived in Tokyo this week to apparently spruik the benefits of helicopter money to ward off deflation, the political landscape could not have looked more propitious.

When many of Japan's developed-country peers such as Australia are seeing decline in support for once dominant two-party systems, Japan seems to be switching back to its old one-and-a-half-party arrangement.
