Tokyo | Alarm over talks between Papua New Guinea and China about a potential security and policing deal highlight the uphill balance facing the Albanese government’s efforts to counter Beijing’s rising influence in the region.

The Australian prime minister on Tuesday played down the implications of China’s approach to the Marape government. Both Port Moresby and Canberra went out of their way to emphasise the importance of the existing security arrangements between their governments.
