The one book you should read this summer

It's not fair dinkum fiction, but The Overstory, by Richard Powers, has plenty of lessons for us wage slaves.

If you only read one book this summer, well, you should read more, but if that’s your reality then may I suggest The Overstory. It’s billed as the “best book ever written about trees”, which sounds about as appealing as “the definitive history of auditing”.

It was recommended by my wife’s green-tinged uncle, who has planted his own rainforest in Byron Bay, which almost atones for his Audi SUV. Uncle Gus loved this latest work by Richard Powers so much he bought it in hard copy, having first read it on Kindle, an act of unnecessary consumption that certainly goes against the spirit of conservation the American author is seeking to promote.
