Retailers say underpayment crackdown ignores award complexity

Retailers have accused the Morrison government of ignoring award complexity as the "cause" behind most underpayments as a further suite of punishments were flagged for employers that don't pay staff correctly.

Industrial Relations Minister Christian Porter warned on Tuesday that under its proposed underpayment regime, which would include jail time for the most serious exploitation and potentially director disqualification and "naming and shaming" notices, penalties would be unavoidable.
