Schools doing well in reading and maths 'deserve more autonomy'
Giving more autonomy to principals of schools that perform strongly on literacy and numeracy is one strategy being used to turn around falling performance on reading and maths, says the head of the NSW Department of Education, Mark Scott.
Mr Scott told The Australian Financial Review Reshaping Australia Dialogues he was disturbed by Australian literacy and numeracy scores, which have been sliding on the OECD's Program for International Student Assessment for more than a decade.
