Right policy will lead education out of crisis
Former Deakin University vice-chancellor Jane den Hollander, the recipient of this year's AFR Higher Education Lifetime Achievement Award, is no stranger to navigating through crises.
It was August 2013 when Shanghai Rankings phoned Deakin University vice-chancellor Jane den Hollander out of the blue with some important news: Deakin had landed a spot in the 401 to 500 slot on the Academic Rankings of World Universities.
It was a high point in the career of den Hollander, who took her first university management role in 1995 as consultant to, and then executive director of, student services at the University of Western Australia.
