Personal files on researchers at ARC smacks of ‘McCarthyism’: Carr
Researchers’ futures are being compromised and potentially curtailed by a main funding body that has started keeping personal records, including security concerns raised by a contentious “tracker” of research connections with China, Senate estimates heard.
Under questioning in Senate estimates on Friday, senior representatives from the Australian Research Council admitted that personal files were being kept on individual researchers and that these files might include information contained in the China Defence Research Tracker run by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute.
