Melbourne University named Australia’s best despite ranking dip

Melbourne University has again been named Australia’s best on a major international ranking, but was among seven of the top eight to have its position downgraded.
While Melbourne went backwards three places to 35, the biggest loser in the 2023 edition of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) was the University of Sydney, which plummeted 12 places to 72.
