End of ‘sweetheart’ payroll tax deal will hurt girls schools

Some Victorian private girl schools could close because they lack the philanthropic support from alumni to cushion against the government’s surprise decision to impose payroll tax, a principal has warned.
Annette Rome, the principal of St Margaret’s Berwick Grammar, a 900-student school in the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne, said the change would add nearly $1 million to operating costs.
