Domestic violence rife among students

Women who have experienced domestic violence are more likely to drop out of university, reduce their working hours or leave the workforce.

Researchers who found that nearly one in five young women who have been in a relationship have experienced domestic violence say it can cause them to drop out of university or work as a result, adding lifelong economic harm to the human toll.

Anne Summers, professor of domestic and family violence at the University of Technology Sydney’s Business School, said discovering that domestic violence was so prevalent among young women aged 18-24 was shocking.
