The security gates at the entrance to RMIT’s campus, vast and green by local standards, in District 7 of sprawling Ho Chi Minh City were installed by an officiously minded senior manager some years ago.
The pass-swipe gates – reminiscent of those restricting entry to a big four consultancy firm or bank – were intended, it seems, to keep intruders and imposters out. The gates have never been turned on and never used – an obsolete remnant of a misguided managerial decision.
