Super definition puts withdrawal schemes in federal crosshairs

Financial Services Minister Stephen Jones has slammed the idea of withdrawing compulsory super payments to contribute to home deposits, reinforcing the likelihood that Labor will ban the practice.

His comments follow Treasurer Jim Chalmers announcing consultation on legislating a purpose for Australia’s $3.3 trillion superannuation system, which a Treasury paper suggests will likely shut the door on early access to superannuation savings other than in “exceptional circumstances”.
