How to maximise pension payments if one spouse is younger
Keeping a younger spouse’s super in accumulation phase can have the benefit of improving the age pension entitlement of the other person.
John WasilievColumnistQ: I am 66 and my wife is 64 and we both currently have account-based pensions withdrawn from our respective super funds. Shortly I will be applying for the government age pension and hope to qualify for a part pension. Ahead of this we have been thinking about rolling back my wife’s super to accumulation mode to preserve capital. I’ve seen on the Services Australia website that super in accumulation account is not included as an age pension asset.
My understanding is such a rollback will reduce our assets under the assets test. That said, I am nervous the rollback may not be accepted by Services Australia/Centrelink. Brad.
