Can a couple transfer shares from an SMSF into their own names?

The short answer is ‘yes’ but there will be some complexity, paperwork and fees involved.

Q: I’m an 84-year-old pensioner thinking about winding up an SMSF I have with my wife. We are the only trustees and the fund has a share portfolio and some cash. We have paid ourselves the minimum pension for the 2023-24 financial year in cash in early September. Can we transfer all the shares in the SMSF to our personal names? I believe there will be no problem transferring the cash component. What do I need to know? Sharad.

A: The short answer to your question is that it is possible to transfer shares owned by a SMSF to your personal names.
