Small and medium businesses must act big in cybersecurity fight

SMBs face the same frightening cybersecurity landscape as larger enterprises, but lack anything like the same financial muscle and expert staff to fight back.

When Australia’s top cyber spy Abigail Bradshaw took to the stage at The Australian Financial Review Cyber Summit last September, she had a smorgasbord of topics to pick from as she sought to ensure the business executives in the audience understood the scale of security challenges facing them.

Amid all the talk of crises shaking large enterprises, like the global CrowdStrike outage, Bradshaw – director-general of the Australian Signals Directorate – made a point of calling out the under-appreciated and under-protected cohort of small and medium-sized companies.
