‘Nanny state’: Top techies slate rushed social media laws

Australia risks turning into a “nanny state” as it rushes through new age-restriction laws for social media, according to technology industry leaders, who warned the proposals wouldn’t work and would have unexpected consequences due to ill-defined legislation.

The government’s proposed ban – introduced into parliament on Thursday – gave industry just a day to supply fresh submissions in response. It has a loose definition of what counts as a social media platform, and no detail on how the age limits should be enforced.
