ANZ Banking Group chief executive Shayne Elliott is clearly under no illusion that speculation about his tenure has become frenzied.

Elliott is the longest serving of the big four CEOs, having been appointed in 2016. Last year, ANZ ceded home loan market share at an alarming rate while its “big, awesome, all-singing, all-dancing digitisation program”, known first as ANZx, then ANZ Plus, still neither sings nor dances.
