NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has requested a doubling of defence force troops to help out with the emergency service effort as floods take hold across Sydney and a bulk carrier remains stranded off Wollongong.

SES workers performed 116 flood rescues overnight including 83 rescues since 9pm on Sunday. The rescues come as 64 evacuation orders in place across parts of Sydney and regional NSW including the Illawarra and Hunter regions, affecting 32,000 people.
