Qld’s 50¢ bus fares are a desperate political gimmick

Cutting public transport fares to 50¢ for six months is another ratcheting up of a fiscally irresponsible political culture that expects governments to endlessly buy votes by offering all kinds of taxpayer-funded goodies.

As pre-election cash splashes go, at least Queensland Premier Steven Miles’ cutting of public transport fares to 50¢ for six months will only cost the state’s budget $150 million.

It’s a relatively modest amount compared to the $3 billion cost of federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers’ $300 electricity bill handout to all households.
