Why Sussan Ley should say no deal to the Nats

Unless the Liberal Party regains the support of professional women in what were once safe seats, it is difficult to see how it, with or without the National Party, can form government.

For the Coalition to deliver Australia’s 18 million voters either a competent government or – as is more likely – an effective opposition in 2028, Opposition Leader Sussan Ley needs the Liberals to win 30-plus seats, and these seats won’t be coming from the National Party.

Successful, well-paid, professional women living in Australian capital cities deserted the Liberal Party in droves at the 2022 election, handing 10 formerly blue ribbon Liberal urban seats over to seven teal MPs and three Green MPs.
