Trump’s war on Harvard could cripple Australian research

The blunt-force targeting of foreign students is not only reckless but erodes the pillars of intellectual diversity that Trump claims to be defending.

Donald Trump has taken a sledgehammer where a scalpel was needed in his crackdown on Harvard University by threatening its tax-exempt status, federal funding and ability to admit foreign students.

The Trump administration claims its clampdown is due to “anti-American, antisemitic, pro-terrorist agitators on (Harvard’s) campus”. It follows a letter sent to Harvard on April 11 demanding federal control to vet student admissions, faculty hiring and political views of both students and faculty, which the university firmly rejected. While a temporary court order has paused the foreign student ban, there is little real relief for students now trapped in limbo over their academic future.
