Not the apolitical inquiry to COVID-19 lessons Australia needs

Anthony Albanese has undermined what ought to be an examination of what went right, what went wrong and the lessons Australian should draw if it confronts a similar crisis.

By excluding any “actions taken unilaterally by state and territory governments” from the COVID-19 inquiry terms of reference, to shield Labor state governments in Victoria, Queensland, and Western Australia from scrutiny, Anthony Albanese has undermined what ought to be an apolitical examination into what went right, what went wrong and what lessons Australian should draw if it confronts a similar crisis.

Benefiting from its isolated location, Australia did well during the pandemic to achieve world-leading health and economic outcomes, including a relatively low death rate and a jobless rate that got nowhere near the feared rates of 10 per cent or more.
