I agree with Robert Breunig’s take on the attacks on teal MP Allegra Spender’s call for serious tax reform (Letters). The current settings are broken; we all need to take a deep breath and recut the tax mix for the greater good.
But we need more. I see little point in recalibrating the tax levers if the government of the day is going to continue to spend beyond our means. It’s like allowing an overextended mortgagor to refinance so they can throw a bigger party.
