Veterans lash Marles for stripping medals over war crimes probe

Defence Minister Richard Marles is under fire from veterans after military commanders were stripped of their distinguished service medals, as the Albanese government finalised its response to Afghan war crimes allegations.

The mid-ranking officers are not accused of war crimes themselves, or even knowing about them; instead they came under scrutiny from war crimes inquiry head Paul Brereton for “moral command responsibility and accountability” because crimes were allegedly committed by the men they commanded in the field.
