Margaret Gardner’s article “Why tertiary education should be one sector not two” (April 16) impolitely asks, “What benefits do TAFE institutions get from having a higher education designation?”

I cannot explain the benefits to Professor Gardner. However, I can offer a learning experience that may shed light on the mystery. Why have higher education in institutions that are closely connected to industry, that engage in teaching and applied research, and have a diverse student population?
