New research suggests mandatory caps on new overseas students will lead to lower rents in inner-city areas where they tend to live – but only to the tune of about $5 a week – and have zero to no effect anywhere else.

Easing pressure on rents and house prices by reducing demand are among reasons the Albanese government and the federal Opposition have given for policies to reduce net migration targets, starting with foreign students.
