‘Completely unacceptable’: PM announces ‘exposure draft’ of grocery code

Lucy Slade

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced an “exposure draft” of the mandatory food and grocery code, as well as amendments to legislation that will be introduced into the parliament this year.

The announcement comes after the ACCC alleged that Woolworths and Coles raised prices for about 250 products before dropping them for their promotions.

“The legislation that we would introduce would mean that Aldi, Coles, Woolworths and Met Cash would face multimillion-dollar penalties for serious breaches,” Albanese said.

“These are serious allegations that the ACCC is bringing before the courts. If this is found to be true, it’s completely unacceptable.

“This is not the Australian spirit. Customers don’t deserve to be treated as fools by the supermarkets. They deserve much, much better than that.”

He said budgets were tight and every dollar mattered for people at the checkouts.
