G20 goes soft on Russia as Putin threatens to use nuclear weapons

Rio de Janiero | The G20 leaders summit has pulled its punches on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, just as the 1000-day war entered a dangerous new phase with Vladimir Putin upping his threat to use nuclear weapons.

As the two-day summit of the world’s 20 largest economies wound up in Brazil on Wednesday AEDT, the final declaration also gave climate laggards such as Russia, China and India leeway to keep polluting beyond 2050, and failed to mention Israel’s right to defend itself, or recognise the more the 100 hostages still in captivity.
