Doug Anthony, a former deputy prime minister and leader of the National Party who died on Sunday aged 90, was one of those public figures where the old saying "what you see is what you get" just didn’t apply.

Anthony always seemed comfortable in his own skin – an impression reinforced by sunny good looks. He was friendly, even avuncular, but his sunny exterior masked an intrepid politician.
