Dentists want exemptions as medical payroll tax disruption spreads

Dentists are urging state authorities to follow South Australia’s lead and exempt them from new payroll tax liabilities that have emerged from a new interpretation of the rules and which doctors say will drive up medical bills.

Medical practitioners working in health clinics are being subjected to payroll tax for the first time, even if they are independent contractors, as the result of recent cases brought by State Revenue NSW and Victoria’s Commissioner of State Revenue which considered contractual arrangements for medical services.
