Doctors prepare for contractor payroll tax hit

Doctors across NSW face the prospect of tens of millions in retrospective payroll tax bills, after a court challenge failed to block moves to treat health practitioners as contractors to large medical centre operators.

The NSW Court of Appeal this week opted unanimously not to take up a challenge by private centre operator Thomas and Naaz, an appeal which followed moves by the state’s revenue commissioner to secure more than $795,000 in tax liabilities dating back to 2013.
