The US Supreme Court’s infamous decision in the 2010 Citizens United case ushered in an era of unlimited spending in American politics – with exactly the kind of toxic effects one would expect from equating money with speech.

And though Australia doesn’t have the same kind of constitutional protections for free speech as the US – nor the same jurisprudence – we have serious problems with our system of regulating money in politics.
