Australia will permanently store high-level nuclear waste as part of the AUKUS agreement to own and operate nuclear-powered submarines, under a provision that has the support of both major parties, including the Labor Left.

However, the commitment, which was known to both major parties before last year’s federal election, threatens a repeat of the past 30-year skirmish over where to bury the low-level nuclear waste that festoons universities and hospitals across the country.
