The failure of the government to generate any excitement for its agenda is as alarming for Labor stalwarts and MPs as it is encouraging for the Coalition.
The appeal to “Get Australia Back on Track” will never have the power and momentum of “Make America Great Again”. Nor does it signal the policy extremism or the vengeful narcissism of Donald Trump.
But there are still echoes of Trump’s election campaign in Peter Dutton’s efforts to harness voter unhappiness with perceived failures of government and the state of their world.
