Nursing home providers have backed a new Albanese government consultation paper that floats making elderly Australians pay more from their own pocket for aged care as part of efforts to relieve pressure on taxpayers.

The draft National Care and Support Economy Strategy also warns that higher wages for carers working in the aged, disability, veterans and early childhood sectors can only be achieved through productivity gains to avoid driving up costs of services further.
