Cases surge as thousands forced to isolate
A record 10,186 COVID-19 infections were recorded across the country on Monday, as the spread of the highly infectious omicron variant forces tens of thousands of Australians into isolation over the holiday period.
NSW reported 6324 COVID-19 cases on Monday, despite relatively low testing volumes. Of the 97,000 tests conducted over the past 24 hours, 6.5 per cent yielded a positive result, which was a record for the state. Three more people died from the virus in NSW, including the first death linked to the omicron variant.
