Not everyone is happy the Indian cricket team jumped the queue to fly into Australia. The Jefferies family, stuck in Canada, reckon Scott Morrison’s November 13 pledge that Australians were front of the queue showed a lack of “respect for the truth”.

“Racehorses, tennis and cricket players [and] unskilled labour are being given priority over Australians trying to return home," they told a parliamentary committee today. They’re just three of the more than 36,000 Australians trying to escape deadly surges of the coronavirus in the northern hemisphere, but chances of them all making it home for Christmas are slipping by the day. For stranded expats, the familiarity of watching the Boxing Day Test will no doubt feel bittersweet.
