After declaring victory in a bid for the NSW Parliament two weeks ago, libertarian and former senator David Leyonhjelm was narrowly defeated by One Nation and the Animal Justice Party.

One Nation, the anti-Muslim party headed in NSW by former Labor leader Mark Latham, won two of the 21 upper house seats up for election. The result marks a huge success for Mr Latham and One Nation, which won as many seats as the Greens and more than the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party.
