Australia’s annual $1 billion spending on grants for non-medical research should be bolder and tipped towards original and unproven ideas that take greater risks but offer larger rewards, says the chairman of the Australian Research Council.
Professor Peter Shergold, a former academic, chancellor and senior bureaucrat, will on Tuesday launch a paper on how the funding organisation should operate and the type of research it should prioritise over the next two decades.
