Yes, America is fickle – but it’s also our best ally

The only difference between Donald Trump and his Republican and Democrat predecessors is that he is nakedly honest about America’s interests.

Of course, America is a fickle ally. It’s been so in the past, it will be in the future, and it doesn’t matter who the president is. Surprisingly, it took the scenes at a meeting between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky for Australians to realise these things.

After the Oval Office argument, teal MP Zoe Daniel said America “has gone rogue” and Trump had “upended the global order”. No, he didn’t. The only difference between Trump and his Republican and Democrat predecessors is that Trump is nakedly honest about America’s interests. US presidents have always put their country’s perceived interests ahead of whatever values Americans might share with others – and they always will.
