As the Albanese government found itself assailed on national security over the past fortnight over the granting of visas to Palestinians, it is worth keeping in mind that the government never formally set out to offer safe haven for Gazans.

The influx happened organically as the local Palestinian community began applying on behalf of family members to get them out of the war zone.
