Trust Paul Keating to brusquely interrupt the polite ASEAN summit rhetoric about mutual respect, strategic partnerships and greater cooperation between Australia and the countries of South-East Asia.

But even without Keating’s embarrassingly timed blast at his former Labor colleagues, the gap between Australia and the ASEAN bloc in their views on China has been increasingly obvious.
