I was struck by the dignified and respectful way Australia’s Jewish community chose to reflect on the anniversary of October 7. And although passions in the Palestinian community were raw, they too chose to abjure violence as they reflected on their own sufferings. That gives me hope that a new beginning might just be possible for both peoples.

A two-state solution in the Middle East is not the first step, it may only be the last step at the end of a long journey that will be fraught with perils and setbacks.
