John McCarthyFormer Australian ambassadorThe gathering of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation in the Uzbek city of Samarkand last week focused heavily on the bilateral meeting between China’s Xi Jinping and Russia’s Vladimir Putin, dominated as it is by the course of the Russia-Ukraine war and the slower-moving crisis over Taiwan.
Unlike the “no limits” agreement between Xi and Putin at their last meeting in February on the eve of Russia’s invasion, there was not much advance on their relationship.
