China’s Xi courts neighbours ahead of Putin meet

Tokyo | Xi Jinping has talked up China’s economic and security ties with its central Asian neighbours ahead of his first overseas trip since the start of the pandemic, when he will seek to bolster an alliance of countries loyal to Beijing.
Mr Xi left China on Wednesday and arrived for a state visit in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, where he will also meet regional leaders, including Russia’s under-pressure President Vladimir Putin.
