By sheer quirk of circumstance, in 2008 I was at the University of Virginia for the funeral of William C Battle, US ambassador to Australia during John F Kennedy’s presidency.
Battle was in Kennedy’s PT boat squadron in the South Pacific during World War II. He had helped Kennedy in the rescue of comrades when a Japanese destroyer sliced their boat in half.
