Former foreign minister Bob Carr has urged the Albanese government to abandon Australia’s deference to the US, warning it is a woeful policy response to Donald Trump’s radical agenda.

In comments on the sidelines of the Australia-Canada Economic Leadership Forum, Carr warned that Trump’s policies towards global trade and the rules-based international order were a “tectonic shift” that US allies are yet to properly respond to due to a “state of shock”.
