In official Australian records, King Charles began his life here as just four dashes in a piece of official correspondence from then prime minister Ben Chifley to governor general William McKell.

On November 5, 1948, roughly a week before the King was born, Chifley wrote to McKell enclosing the draft of a telegram he wanted to be dispatched to Buckingham Palace the moment news of the birth filtered through.
