Some of Australia’s most famous and popular beaches have been stripped of sand by the storm lashing the east coast and could stay that way for months, in a big hit to tourism and holiday plans from Noosa to Coffs Harbour.
A natural process during big surf caused by the storm has carved millions of tonnes of sand away from the shoreline and deposited it out to sea as sand bars that protect the coast from worse damage, experts say.
