AI drives surge in fossil fuel investment

The explosive growth of data centres that power artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT is driving a surge in new fossil fuel investment, as operators scramble to find new electricity sources to meet their huge electricity requirements.

According to new analysis, a 67 per cent increase in global data centre investment in the past two years has led many operators to turn to gas-power generation, amid concerns the renewables rollout is not happening fast enough to meet international climate goals.
